What is SSL Encryption?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) is the standard for secure data transmission over the internet. It was created by Netscape and uses authentication and encryption technology developed by RSA Data Security Inc. With this security technology, information you send can be trusted to arrive privately and unaltered to the server you send to. Nearly all modern web browsers including Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer utilize SSL.

How safe is SSL?

Much publicity was made in early 1998 when a programmer from France was able to break RSA's "RC4" 40 bit encryption technology, in response to an online challenge. But to do this, he required 120 workstations on two supercomputers running for 8 straight days to break a single message. To break another transmission would require another 8 days. So, while internet encyryption can be broken, it requires expensive and sophisticated computing power.

However, we use RC4 128-bit encryption, which is 2 to the 88th times harder to decrypt than 40 bit encryption. That means that the computing power required to decrypt such a message would be more than 1,000,000,000,000 (trillions) of times greater than that which was used to decrypt the RC4 40-bit message. It is practically impossible to decrypt a message using RC4 128 bit encryption and hardly worth the computing resources required for it.
